Questions I get all the time

Plain-English points basics — educational only, not financial advice. Offers and terms change; always verify with the issuer.

What are points vs miles?

Points often mean bank or hotel currencies; miles usually mean airline programs. Both can book travel. Bank points stay more flexible until you transfer; miles are typically stuck in that airline’s world.

How do transfers work?

Many credit cards let you move points to airline/hotel transfer partners. Transfers are usually one-way. Find award space first, then transfer, then book — ideally in one sitting.

What’s an annual fee (AF)?

A yearly charge to keep the card. Weigh earning + credits against the fee before the anniversary. “Bonus day” is not automatically “cancel day.”

What’s a minimum spend / MSR?

The amount you must spend in a set window to earn the welcome bonus. Only count spend you’d do anyway (or real business spend). Don’t invent purchases.

Portal vs transfer — which wins?

Shopping portal: extra cash back/points when you’d buy anyway — confirm the rate, then click through.
Transfer: often better when award space beats cash.
Bank travel portal: convenient; sometimes weaker value. Price all three when it matters.

How do I know if a deal is real?
